Moving house: organize it yourself or trust a specialist?
Ten years ago my husband and I bought a new apartment. The apartment had been under construction for a long time, we paid our dues diligently, and we were looking forward to moving in. And now, the big day had arrived!
Organizing the move on our own
At that time in our small country town nobody had even heard of moving companies. And we, of course, decided to organize the apartment move by ourselves.
The first question that stumped us was "where to get boxes to pack things?" We had to run around to acquaintances. And since we were both working, we only had weekends left to search, and our urgent move was postponed for another full week.
The next problem was transportation. Fortunately our good friend had an old Gazelle. We had agreed in advance that he would come up on Saturday at 10 am. But on that day a friend called and said that the car broke down, and unfortunately he couldn't help us today, and asked to move the date to tomorrow. Of course my husband and I were very upset, but what can we do, we can't carry the disassembled furniture on our hands! It was decided to schedule the move for Sunday.
Finally, the next day the work began. The men carried things, and I fussed over them, begging them to be careful, and constantly reminding them that in this box we had a vase given by mother, and that over there was a set from my grandmother.
To our great surprise, the "Gazelle" turned out to be large only in appearance. In fact, at one time it fit very little stuff, and we spent the whole day trying to move all our belongings.
In the evening we were so tired that we could not even find the strength to take the boxes apart and arrange the furniture. We had a quick dinner and went to bed for the work week ahead of us.
Unpacking and arranging things took the next few days-late returns from work are not very conducive to doing chores. In addition, we had not thought to sign the boxes, and to find any thing we need at the moment was extremely difficult. We were nervous and angry at ourselves for not being smart.
Now we remember that time with a smile. How inexperienced we were! And we didn't have much opportunity.
Moving with professionals
It's no different today! Recently a friend told me a story. They bought a new apartment, decided to move. They are busy people, and had no time to organize the move by their own efforts. So they contacted Manhattan movers.
First the estimator arrived, calculated how many cars and how much time would be needed, and calculated the cost of the service. Then the company employees delivered the boxes, duct tape, plastic wrap, and everything they needed for packing. On X day, the movers came, dismantled the furniture, and loaded it into the cars. The friend was worried that the fragile items remained intact, but the specialists reassured her: the bottom and walls of the body are lined with soft material from the inside.
The shipment was successful. Having delivered the things to the new address, the company's workers unloaded the cars and lifted the items to the desired floor. They helped unpack the boxes, gathered and put the furniture back, hooked up all the appliances, and in addition took out all the used packing materials.
My friend was happy! The house-walking by professionals took about 9 hours. By the way, this company was recommended to her by an acquaintance.
To summarize the above
To organize and perform the move yourself under the power of any adult, but too tiring and fraught with health risks of dragging cabinets, pianos or sofas. It is preferable to use the services of a professional mover, especially if he is trusted!
Awesome article, it was exceptionally helpful! I simply began in this and I'm becoming more acquainted with it better! Cheers, keep doing awesome! furniture mover nyc
